Fair-Isle Mittens Knitting Pattern from 1945

Today’s find on Trove (the online digital media collection from the Australian National Library), is a knitting pattern for these smart Fair-Isle mittens.

Free knitting pattern for Fair Isle mittens from 1945

Sized to fit a hand of 7 inches in circumference (a teen or women’s size small in today’s standards), these mittens can be knit with oddments of fingering weight wool in any choice of colours. They are knit flat on two needles for those who don’t like knitting in the round, but you could easily modify the pattern for in the round knitting without seams.

You’ll find the pattern in “The Land” newspaper, March 29th 1945.

How to Knock out a Few Jumpers (Sweaters) for Christmas

How can you knit everyone you know a jumper for Christmas?

Knit them on 10mm/US size 15 needles like this gorgeous number from 1967

Cabled sweater knit with several strands of yarn on extra large needles.

I have to admit, I don’t usually like garments knit with super bulky yarns, but the cable up the front of this jumper/sweater, is just enough to break up the extra bulkiness caused by using several strands of yarn together.

Check out the pattern: The Super Sonic Knit, from the Australian Women’s Weekly, December 13th 1967 and be on your way to filling your Christmas gift collection and emptying your stash at the same time!

Knit an Elephant Toy – Free Vintage Knitting Pattern

Knit this sweet vintage elephant, courtesy of the Australian Women’s Weekly, Saturday Nov 1st 1941.

1940's knitted elephant toy with free pattern included

Wearing a smart red waistcoat and sporting a red ribbon around his neck, this happy elephant would make a great present for the little ones. (Just make sure to embroider the eyes on instead of using buttons or beads).

Jumbo is knit with fingering weight wool on UK size 11/US 2/3mm needles and measures about 15 inches tall.

I have a soft spot for elephants, so expect to see more in the future!
