Rose Leaf Counterpane

Three repeats of the rose leaf counterpane pattern

Sample showing three repeats of the pattern.

Materials

This pattern calls for an unspecified amount of #12 cotton (in modern terms known as fingering weight), and old UK size 11 needles (metric 3mm, US 2 or 3)

To figure out how much yarn you will need for your chosen size bedspread, knit a single pattern repeat and multiply the amount of yarn used by 52 to figure out how much yarn you will need for each strip. If you have chosen a yarn other than fingering weight you can also use this swatch to figure out how many pattern repeats you need to make the quilt the length you desire.

You will need extra yarn for joining the strips and an edging.

Special Abbreviations

Inc = increase by knitting into the front, then back of the next stitch before dropping it off the left hand needle.

Pattern

Cast on 75 sts

Place a marker after the 13th stitch and the 62nd stitch. Work the 13 sts either side of the centre panel either in garter stitch (slipping the 1st st of every row), or as follows:

1st, 2nd and 3rd rows: Sl 1, (k3, p3) twice, work a row of the centre panel, (k3, p3) twice, k1. (My sample is slightly different but these instructions allow the checks to match up when you sew your strips together)
4th, 5th and 6th rows: Sl 1, (p3, k3) twice, work a row of the centre panel, (p3, k3) twice, k1.
At the same time, work the centre panel as follows:
1st row: (P3, yo, k1, yo, p3, sl 1, k1, psso, k10, k2tog) twice, p3, yo, k1, yo, p3
2nd row: (k3, p3, k3, p12) twice, k3, p3, k3
