Dobby Socks
From KnitWiki
Dobby Socks are a pair of socks that do not match. The name comes from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of novels. Dobby, a house elf, is one of the characters introduced in the second book of the series - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. At the end of The Chamber of Secrets, Harry frees Dobby by tricking Dobby's master, Lucius Malfoy into handing Dobby an item of clothing (a sock), thus freeing him from his enslavement.
In the third book of the series Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Harry Potter and Dobby exchange Christmas presents.
Harry has forgotten to get Dobby a present so he gave him a pair of his "oldest and foulest, mustard yellow" socks that had belonged to his uncle. Dobby is delighted and says "but sir ... they has made a mistake in the shop, Harry Potter, they is giving you two the same!"
Dobby has made Harry a pair of socks, one is bright red with broomsticks and the other green with snitches on it. (A snitch is a ball used in the magical game of quidditch) Dobby had made the socks himself out of wool so we can assume that he knitted them. Thus the term Dobby Socks was born.
