From Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee. Original text at Project Gutenberg.
[edit] Original Pattern
Cast on 26 stitches on 3 needles. Begin by seaming the first stitch, knit the second, and slip it on the left-hand needle, bring the 1 from behind over, which decreases a stitch; knit the 3 next stitches plain, pass the thread in front of each of the 2 next stitches and knit them, which increases and makes the holes; then knit 3 more plain, and decrease again as above; then seam a stitch; and so on all round: after each round done in this way, knit a plain round.
[edit] Updated Version
[edit] In the round
- Cast on a multiple of 13 stitches
- Round one - [p1, k2tog, k3, (yo k1) twice, k3, k2tog] repeat as required
- Round two - knit
[edit] On 2-needles
- Cast on a multiple of 13 stitches
- Row one - [p1, k2tog, k3, (yo k1) twice, k3, k2tog] repeat as required
- Row two - purl
To get matched decreases substitute the second k2tog for psso or k2togTBL depending on your preference. The top half of the photo above shows the original instructions with both decreases using k2tog. After the garter stitch separator in the middle of the swatch I switched to the matched decreases and used psso.
[edit] Abbreviations
k = knit
p = purl
k2tog = knit two stitch together
k2togTBL = knit two stitches together through the back of the loops
psso = slip next stitch as if to knit, knit one, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (decreases one stitch)
