Pattern:
Commence with 90 chain and join into a ring.
The first cable is worked as follows: Draw up a loop on the hook, to be three-quarters of an inch in height, wool over hook, pass hook right through first chain in ring, wool over and draw through a loop three-quarters of an inch long, wool over, hook into same ch., draw through another long loop (there should now be 5 sts. on hook), wool over and draw right through these 5, wool over and through remaining stitch.

Now work the 2nd Cable as follows: £ Hook into 2nd chain, wool over and pull through a long loop, wool over, pass hook again into 2nd ch. and draw through a 2nd long loop, wool over, pass hook again into same ch. and draw through a 3rd loop (there should now be 6 sts. on hook), wool over and through these 6 sts. at once, wool over and through remaining st. £; * miss 3 ch., into 4th ch. from hook work (4 tr., 1 ch., 4 tr.); miss 3 ch. and repeat from £ to £ into 4th ch. from hook, and again into next ch.; repeat from * all round, ending with a fan; join to cable with a slip stitch. (There should be 10 sections).

The first Cable in the next and every following round is worked as follows:
Draw up a loop to be three-quarters of an inch in height, wool over, pass hook right under cable of previous round; wool over and draw through a 2nd long loop, wool over, hook right under same cable, draw through a 3rd long loop (5 sts. on hook), wool over and through these 5 sts. at once, wool over and through last st.

** Hook right under 2nd Cable in previous row, wool over, draw through 1st long loop, wool over, hook under same cable, draw through 2nd long loop, wool over, hook again under previous cable, draw through 3rd loop (6 sts on hook), wool over and through these 6 sts., wool over and through last st. **.

From ** to ** forms the Cable stitch, which throughout direction will be referred to as Cable, with the exception of first Cable in each round.

2nd Round: * 2 Cable on top of 2 Cable of previous round, passing hook right under previous 2, (4 tr., 1 ch., 4 tr.) into centre of fan in previous round; repeat from * all round and join.

3rd and 4th Rounds: As 2nd round.

5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Rounds: * 2 Cable, passing hook right under previous two, (2 tr., 1 ch., 3 tr.) into centre of previous fan; repeat from * all round, and join.

9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Rounds: * 2 Cable, passing hook right under previous two, (2 tr. 1 ch., 2 tr.) into centre of previous fan; repeat from * all round, and join.

13th and 14th Rounds: * 2 Cable, passing hook right under previous two, (1 tr., 1 ch., 1 tr.) into centre of previous fan; repeat from * all round, and join.

15th, 16th and 17th Rounds: *2 Cable, passing hook right under previous two, 1 ch., 1 tr., into centre of previous fan, 1 ch.; repeat from * all round and join.

18th Round: 1 Cable on top of each Cable in previous round. Break off.

Work a rope of Cable for top as follows: 3 ch., turn and work 1 Cable into each ch., join. Continue working round, until rope measures about 6 inches, making 3 Cable in each round and passing the hook right under each previous Cable. Form into a loop and attach to the top as seen in illustration. Finish the top with a pom-pom.

Make a pad the desired size and slip stitch to the crocheted cover at lower edge.
